The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team ended its 2004-05 campaign with an overall record of 24-7 and a 16-4 record in CCAA competition to finish in a first-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino, marking the Broncos' first CCAA title since 1981 and the best overall win total since the 1953-54 season. This was also the third-consecutive season that the Broncos earned 20 or more wins in a season and marked the second time in three seasons that the Broncos were crowned the NCAA Division II West Region champions.
As the West Region's No. 3 seed, CPP defeated No. 6 seed Seattle Pacific on March 11 and No. 2 seed Hawaii-Hilo on March 12, 82-77 and 73-62, respectively, before defeating No. 5 seed Alaska Fairbanks, 65-58, on March 14 to advance to the Elite Eight in Grand Forks, N.D., where the Broncos lost to Tarleton State, 58-56, in the opening round on March 23.
Aside from postseason success, the 2004-05 campaign was also highlighted by several milestones. Head coach Greg Kamansky earned his 100th-career victory on March 4 at home against Cal State Monterey Bay, 79-66, and senior guard/forward Jeff Bonds became the fifth player in the program's history to earn All-America status.
Bonds led the Broncos in both points per game and rebounds per game, with 17.1 and 6.5, respectively. Senior guard David Sybesma led the team in assists, averaging 3.8 per game, and had the team's second-best field-goal percentage (.544). Freshman forward Kevin Neveu had a team-high field-goal percentage of .561.
In his swan song season, Bonds ranked among the all-time CPP greats in 11 different categories, including four season categories and seven career categories. Of those 11, Bonds ranks among the top five in nine of them, and of those nine, he holds the record in five: career points (1,777), career field goals made (525), free throws made in a season (153), career field goals made (525), and games played (117). All of these records remain unbroken.
Sybesma also finished his career listed in the top 10 in nine categories, including the second-most assists for a career (356). For the season, junior guard Jonathan Boyd had the fourth-highest total for 3-point field goals made in a season (54).
As a team, the Broncos during the 2004-05 campaign set records in five season-related categories: 3-point field goals made (221), 3-point field goals attempted (570), free throw percentage (.731), assists (497), and steals (262).
