The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team ended its 2001-02 season with an overall record of 18-9 and a 15-7 record against conference teams to place third in the CCAA. The season ended in a difficult 67-63 overtime loss at San Francisco State on March 2, 2002.
"Unfortunately, we fell short of the playoffs, but sometimes you have great years and things like that happen," said head coach Greg Kamansky. "We could have won 20 games and not gotten into the playoffs it was such a strong region last year. But I have no doubt in my mind we were one of the top teams in the region. We had some ground-breaking achievements from a group that helped reach a new level for this program."
The Broncos were led on offense by senior guard Lucas LeCour, who averaged a team-high 14.1 points and 3.1 assists per game and a third-best 3.3 rebounds per game. Freshman guard/forward Jeff Bonds and senior forward Raymond Hubbard both averaged double-digit point totals of 11.7 and 10.3, respectively. Bonds (136) and Hubbard (135) had the top two rebounding totals for the team. Though Bonds had one more rebound than Hubbard, Hubbard had a better average of nearly 5.2 rebounds compared to Bonds' 5.0.
With Bonds' impressive numbers as a freshman, the Broncos had a positive outlook going into the 2002-03 season. The 2001-02 season also marked the debut of freshman guard/forward David Sybesma, who finished his first CPP season averaging 6.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Sybesma would later become the CCAA Player of the Year for the 2004-05 season and earn other accolades during his four-year career with the Broncos.
The 2001-02 season was also one in which many records were broken. LeCour finished his career with the Broncos as their all-time leader in points with 1,302, free throws made (324), career steals (207), and tied the record of games played (108). His steals record still stands.
LeCour also ranked high with statistics such as 436 field goals made (third), 106 3-pointers made (fourth), 288 career assists (fourth) and 77 steals in the season (third).
Senior guard T.J. Williams finished his career with the Broncos' second-most career 3-point field goals made (146) and attempted (408) as well as the fifth-most steals for a career (104). Senior guard Marques Montgomery ended his career with the Broncos' sixth-best 3-point percentage (.389) and sixth-highest steals for a career (103).
