The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team ended the 1989-90 season with an overall record of 9-18 and a CCAA record of 3-11 in conference play to finish tied for seventh in the conference with Chapman College.

Leading the charge for the Broncos was junior forward Terry Ross, who finished his first season averaging a double-double a game. Ross earned an average of 21.1 points and 11.5 rebounds per game to accomplish this remarkable feat and became the fourth CPP player in history to do this.

Junior guard Chancellor McCobb was second on the team in points and third on the team in rebounds, averaging 14.9 points and 4.4 rebounds, respectively. Junior center Rafael Vargas had the second-best rebounding average (4.6 per game).

With an average of 3.6 per game, sophomore guard D.J. Norman led the Broncos in assists.

Ross joined Cal Poly Pomona's 30-Plus Club five times over during this season. For every game he scored 30 or more points, he tied the fourth-highest point total once (37 vs. Pacific Christian), the sixth-highest point total twice (36 vs. La Verne and vs. Cal State Bakersfield), the 11th-highest once (34 vs. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) and the 33rd-highest once (30 vs. Cal State Northridge). In a game vs. Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 30, 1989, McCobb scored 31 points, which was tied for the 25th-highest point total by a Bronco all-time.

In a game against CSUB, Ross set a record for field-goal percentage in a game when he made nine of 11 (.818) attempts.

With respect to the season, Ross recorded the highest number of free throw attempts by a Bronco (176) and had the third-most points scored (570), the third-most field goals made (231), the fourth-most rebounds (310), the fourth-most steals (52) and matched the mark for ninth-most blocks (17). His blocks total also put him in a tie for 10th all-time for a CPP career.

Just ahead of Ross in steals for a season was McCobb, who had the third-highest total all-time (60). McCobb also found himself eighth all-time in career steals (60).

Listed as fourth and fifth on the career 3-point field goals made list were Norman (42) and junior guard Ken Scalmanini (25), respectively. In addition, Norman had the fourth-most attempts from the arc for a career (111) at the conclusion of the season.

Senior forward Jim Skinner finished his career on the all-time lists of 3-pointers made (47), 3-pointers attempted (120) and 3-point field goal percentage (.391). Skinner was third on all three lists.

Three of the highest-scoring games in CPP history occurred during this season. The Broncos played two games in which the combined score of the teams was 206, including a 112-97 loss to Southern Utah State on Nov. 25 1989 and a 104-102 loss to CSUB. These scores tied for the 14th-highest combined scores in program history. On a better note, the Broncos on Dec. 30, 1989 defeated La Verne, 103-101, to equal the 17th-highest combined score for a CPP game.
