Competing in his first national championship race, Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Carrell certainly represented the university well.

The junior from Westminster finished 65th overall as he traversed the 10,000-meter course in a time of 30:53.9, becoming just the seventh runner in program history to record a 10K time under 31 minutes. Atop that short list are select Broncos' cross country greats, such as Stephane Franke, Tony Reyes and Matt Blaty, and now Carrell is right there with them.

Symbolizing the continued upward direction of CPP cross country, Carrell's championship performance Saturday connects his career legacy to the program's rich history that includes a national title in 1983. Carrell's 30:53.9 mark is the first sub-31 time recorded by a Bronco since 1990. His previous best came at the 2011 NCAA West Region Championships when he recorded a 31:44.0 mark.
