POMONA – Sophomore
Justine Barclay played the game of collegiate career Friday night and it could not have come at a better time.
Barclay scored three goals after Cal Poly Pomona trailed 2-0 as the Broncos earned a 3-2 victory over Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer.
The victory snapped CPP's seven-game losing streak and improves the Broncos to 7-8 overall and 3-8 in the CCAA. CSUS dropped to 7-7-1, 3-7-1.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard early when Alisa Barlow scored in the game's 2nd minute when she closed in on Broncos GK
Ashley Salerno and scored on a feed from Lisa Garcia.
Garcia got a goal of her own at the 19th minute, when she drove in from the right side and scored on a pass from Jade Adamson.
Three minutes later, Barclay worked her way free up front and center, kicked the ball to left side of Warriors GK Millie Brown.
The teams went into halftime with CSUS leading 2-1.
CSUS had just three shots in the first half.
Barclay gave CPP its game-tying goal when she scored in the 64th minute on a pass from senior
Cody McClure. Barclay again was up close and drove it past Brown.
The Canadian, who played her high school soccer at Rancho Cucamonga HS, earned her “hat trick'' when teammate
Carolyn Rubendall found Barclay in front of the net. The 5-3 forward pounded the ball home to give CPP the lead for the first time of the night.
CPP outshot CSUS 15-5 and controlled the ball in its offensive end for most of the final half.
Salerno earned the victory, despite not having a save in the entire game.
The game was the second straight that a Bronco scored three goals against Cal State Stanislaus. Last season,
Britany Garrett scored three in the 4-2 win in Turlock.
The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Sunday when they play host to Chico State. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
