POMONA
– In an evenly played game Sunday, junior Nathan Braunwalder made sure Cal Poly Pomona would enjoy a sun-splashed afternoon on the Kellogg Field pitch.

Junior Tyler Reinhart drove down the left side of the field in the 77th minute, then aptly kicked the ball cross field to Braunwalder, who promptly kicked it past Chico State GK Michael Keohane and the Broncos went on to earn a hard-fought 1-0 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association soccer.

The victory puts CPP at 7-7-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the CCAA, while Chico State drops to 7-5-4, 4-4-4.

The victory total is CPP's most since winning eight in 2006.

Despite having eight offside calls, CPP found a way to win late. CPP had six shots in the second half, but Braunwalder's game-winner was the only SOG in the final 45 minutes.

The goal was Braunwalder's first on the season and Reinhart secured his fifth assist.

Cal Poly Pomona has gained a reputation as a strong second-half team and it factored again against the Wildcats. For the season, CPP has outscored the opposition 18-4 in the second half and won for the sixth time when it scores in the final 45 minutes.

Senior Thomas Ryan was solid in goal for CPP. The El Cajon native earned his first shutout of the season by stopping three SOG.

Senior Miguel Abascal totaled three shots, while Braunwalder had two. Abascal and junior Jason Sanchez were the others with SOG.

Chico State's Jacob Darr went down with 1:58 remaining in the first half. He sustained an arm injury and was taken off the field by a stretcher. The injury delayed the game by 18 minutes and the two teams agreed to have just a 10-minute intermission.

CPP faces CSU East Bay on Friday in Hayward and at UCSD on Sunday. The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Nov. 1 when they take on Cal State San Bernardino for Senior Day.
