POMONA
– It seems that when Cal Poly Pomona's Tyler Reinhart scores goals they come in bunches.

The last time the Fresno junior put the ball into the net was in an 8-1 victory over Dominican in the season opener in late August. And in that game, he tied a school record with three goals.

But on Friday night, Reinhart did one better. He scored a school-record four goals and eight points as the Broncos stunned defending NCAA champion Cal State Dominguez Hills 4-2 at Kellogg Field.

It marked CPP's first win over the perennial California Collegiate Athletic Association favorite since 2005 and became a signature win for first-year coach Lance Thompson.

The Broncos improved to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA – both one-game improvements over last year's squad. CSUDH dropped to 6-4-1, 5-3-1.

Reinhart put CPP on the scoreboard when he scored a header on a free kick from Miguel Abascal in the game's 4th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Reinhart again scored on a cross from Nick Costanza, who placed the ball to Abascal, who fired to Reinhart from five feet out.

But CSUDH was not to be denied in the opening 45 minutes. John Sherman scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Tyler Petry and Andrew Marinez in the 27th minute.

The Toros tied the game at 2-2 on Scott Locken's shot from Sherman in the 34th minute. The teams went into halftime tied at 2.

Reinhart's third goal of the game arrived in the 73rd minute. He raced down the right side and forced Toros GK Marcus Dickerson to pop out. Reinhart then punched it past the right side and CPP led 3-2.

And for added measure, Reinhart earned a breakaway goal that was unassisted in the 80th minute.

Reinhart tied the school record in goals scored in a game with five others in the season opener.

The Broncos were out-shot 24-16, but Broncos goalkeeper Thomas Ryan turned back 11 shots as he improved to 2-2-0.

CPP returns to Kellogg Field on Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. game against Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles won the first game this season, 2-1 in L.A.
