Broncos give No. 3 CSUSB all it can handle

Diaz, Kreutziger stand out in 3-0 loss

SAN BERNARDINO – Cal Poly Pomona faced No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday night and gave the Coyotes all they could handle. 

The Coyotes, who were pushed throughout the match, earned 25-18, 26-24, 27-25 victory over the Broncos at Coussoulis Arena in CCAA play. 

CSUSB improved to 20-1 overall and 13-1 in the CCAA. CPP is 8-13 and 5-9. 

The Broncos played an inspired match after the Coyotes won the first set, 25-18, then hung on for a two-point Game 2 win and came back from a 24-22 deficit in the third set to win 27-25. 

Senior Elizabeth Diaz had 10 kills to lead the Broncos, who hit .245 for the match and proved to be the better blocking team with two solo blocks and 16 block assists while the Coyotes managed just two block assists in the three sets. 

Junior Jasmine Davis had 32 assists, a team-high nine digs and eight blocks, one of them solo from her setter position. Freshman Taylr Kreutziger had nine kills on .471 hitting with five blocks one of them solo for the Broncos. 

CSUSB hit .330 for the match with 56 kills and 36 digs. CPP hit a respectable .247 with 35 kills and 28 digs. The Coyotes played into CPP's hands with 19 attack errors and nine service errors. 

In the first set, the Broncos stayed close at 13-11 on a kill by Kreutziger, but CSUSB went on a 8-2 run to take a 21-13 lead helped by two Bronco attack errors. A kill by Jane Chafeh gave the Coyotes set point and took the set on another Bronco error.

In the second set, the Coyotes moved out to an 18-9 advantage capped by Chafeh's kill, but then it was all CPP. The Broncos outpointed the Coyotes 9-2 to close the gap to 20-18 on a block by Davis and Kreutziger. Moments later, a kill from Diaz put the Broncos within one at 23-22 and tied it at 23-all on a Coyote error. 

CPP took the lead at 24-23 on another kill by Kreutziger off a Davis assist.

After Chafeh knotted the set at 24-all, the Coyotes' Jane Moesche served out the set on back-to-back kills by Chafeh from Sara Hoffman. 

In the third set, CPP took an early 10-6 lead and held it, until the Broncos had set point at 24-21 on a shared block by Davis, junior Kellie Hall and sophomore Kristin McNeese

CSUSB scored three straight points to tie it at 24-24. The score was tied again at 25-25 before Chafeh put down her 20th kill on the night and closed out the match on a Bronco attack error. 

Chafeh led CSUSB with 20 kills on .395 hitting. Junior Nicole Moore had a season-high 13 kills on .304 hitting for CSUSB. Hoffman had a match-high 49 assists. 

Cal Poly Pomona returns to Darlene May Gym on Friday night when they play host to Chico State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
