POMONA
– Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed a Saturday night block party and the result was a success.

The Broncos shut down Cal State Stanislaus with 25 block assists – seven from freshman #Lindsey
Poulos# – and senior Elizabeth Diaz fired a match-high 18 kills as the Broncos snapped their four-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Warriors in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Cal Poly Pomona, now 9-14 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA, earned a 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 over the Warriors for its 14th straight win over the Warriors (8-15, 2-13).

The Broncos totaled 53 kills on the night as sophomore Kristin McNeese contributed a double-digit effort with 13. Three others – junior Kellie Hall, Poulos and junior Courtney Alberi – each had seven.

But the standout play on the block was key in the victory. Setter Jasmine Davis had a fine all-around match with four kills, 37 set assists, two service aces, six digs and six block assists.

Hall was next in line with five block assists.

Game 1 featured a back-and-forth effort from each team. After the game was tied at 17-17, Diaz earned a kill and the Broncos took advantage with three consecutive attack errors from CSUS to lead 22-17 and went on to win.

The Broncos took a 5-4 lead in Game 2 and never relinquished it. CPP earned 13 kills on the attack and were benefited by nine Warrior attack errors.

After intermission, CPP held a lead as large as 17-10, but the Warriors were not about to go down easily. They put together a 9-2 run – led by Andrea Fett's two kills and a service ace – and the game was tied at 19-19.

The game was tied two more times – 20-20 and 21-21 – before Lianne Vicchio's kill and a Bronco ball-handling error put CSUS out front 23-21. A kill from Poulos kept CPP close, but Vicchio and Fett had kills late and CSUS won Game 3, 25-23.

Game 4 was all Cal Poly Pomona as it fired a collective 14-6-28 (.286) and grabbed control early. A Diaz kill put CPP ahead 17-11 and the Broncos were never threatened.

Vicchio led the Warriors with 12 kills and Fett had 10.

CPP next faces Humboldt State on the road Friday night.
