Broncos handed 3-1 loss vs. Cal State L.A.

CPP pushes Golden Eagles in 4-game loss

– Cal Poly Pomona featured a trio of players in double figures in kills, but visiting Cal State L.A. earned victories in games down the stretch to win 3-1 over the Broncos in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday night at Darlene May Gym.

The Golden Eagles earned a 26-28, 26-24, 25-11, 25-23 to improve to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA, while the Broncos are 7-9 and 4-5.

Senior Elizabeth Diaz led the Broncos with 13 kills and freshman Lindsay Poulos was 12-0-21 for a .571 attack percentage in the loss. Freshman Diana Lake also had double digit kills with 10.

The Broncos gave CSULA everything it could handle in the four-game loss. CPP played a strong Game 1 to earn the victory 28-26. CPP held its largest lead at 4 (15-11), but the score would be tied seven times down the stretch.

Three straight attack errors gave CPP a 24-22 lead, but CSULA tied the game with a pair of Kristin McNeese attack errors.

The game was tied two more times before Diaz earned a kill and CPP won the game on an attack error by CSULA.

The Golden Eagles came back to tie the match at 1-1 on the strength of 11 kills and 11 CPP attack errors.

Game 3 belonged to the Golden Eagles as they grabbed a 17-5 and went on to the win.

Tied at 15-15, CSULA scored five straight points with kills from Kaylynne De La Rosa and Gabriela Bulawczyk, two attack errors and a bad set from CPP. CSULA would lead 23-19, but the Broncos made things interesting. Kills from Kellie Hall, Diaz and McNeese cut the lead to 23-22. Each team traded attack errors and CSULA earned the game and match victory on a Zuzana Cizova kill.

Bulawczyk led CSULA with a match-high 14 kills and Cizova and Chelsea Hamilton each had 12.

CSULA led on the block with 18 block assists.

CPP heads to the Bay Area next week with matches against San Francisco State (Friday) and CSU Monterey Bay (Saturday).

The Broncos' next home match is Oct. 23 against Chico State.
