Broncos fight to the end in 3-2 loss at Sonoma State

CPP finishes weekend with a road split

-- Cal Poly Pomona played its most inspired road match of the season and took nationally-ranked Sonoma State to the brink before losing 3-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball Friday night.

Sonoma State rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Cal Poly Pomona in five sets on Senior Night at The Wolves' Den. 

The Broncos are 10-15 overall and 7-11 in the CCAA, while the Seawolves are 20-6, 12-6.

Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set before it forced Sonoma State to take its first timeout of the match. CPP held the Seawolves tojust .089 hitting thanks to 4 1/2 total blocks by the Broncos and 12 digs by libero Audrey Driscoll.

Sonoma State took control of Game 2 early and took the 7-2 lead forcing a Cal Poly Pomona timeout. The Broncos kept things close throughout the second frame, including a 22-21 score in favor of Sonoma State but three straight kills by Sather evened the match at one set apiece.

After the intermission, Cal Poly Pomona survived seven ties and as many lead changes to win Game 3 25-17 thanks to six kills by Kristin McNeese for the Broncos, who hit .286 in the set and held the Seawolves to just eight kills (.111 hitting percentage). 

Sonoma State went on a 11-5 run in Game 4 to finish the set, forcing the fifth and deciding set.

The Seawolves had 12 kills in 25 attacks and just one error (.440) to earn Game 5 and the match.

For Cal Poly Pomona, McNeese paced the Broncos with 15 kills and Elizabeth Diaz added 12. Driscoll finished with 25 digs and Jasmine Davis dealt 45 assists. Taylr Kreutziger had a game-high eight assisted blocks for CCP who finished the night with 9.5 blocks.
