BELMONT – Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer coach Lance Thompson said Friday was a day that he had been waiting on for awhile.
It's safe to say that the Thompson era is off and running quite well as the Broncos finished just a goal shy of a school record in their 8-1 victory over Dominican in a game played at Notre Dame de Namur.
“The effort was there all day,'' said Thompson, who was named CPP's head coach in March. “It's great to see a bunch of guys smiling and supportive of each other. We played well. We've been working hard toward our goals and it's great to see solid results.''
Junior Tyler Reinhart (Fresno) tied a school record shared by five others with three goals and senior Rigo Cardenas (Glendale) scored twice. Other goals were scored by senior Kevin Ramirez (Ontario), senior Dustin Suppe (Chino Hills) and junior Chris Trejo (Pasadena). The eight goals were CPP's most since its 9-1 victory over Division I Loyola Marymount in 1990.
Senior Thomas Ryan (El Cajon) earned the start and gave up a goal in the opening half. Senior Brad Jones (Redondo Beach) kept Dominican off the scoreboard with a scoreless second half.
