POMONA
– During the second half of last season's successful run, Cal Poly Pomona's Elizabeth Diaz played at her best and the Broncos ended up as one of the NCAA Division II's Sweet Sixteen members.

On Friday night, the Escondido native led the way with 13 kills in 30 attacks with seven digs as the No. 18 Broncos defeated visiting Ashland 3-1 in Southern California Classic volleyball play at Darlene May Gym.

The Broncos earned a 25-20, 25-20, 13-25, 25-18 win and improved to 2-0 overall. Ashland, which lost to No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino 3-0 earlier Friday, is 0-2.

“We showed a diverse attack tonight,'' Broncos coach Rosie Wegrich said. “Liz and Kristin (McNeese)# will show as our kill leaders, but we had solid efforts from several people. We had to work harder and smarter against a pretty sound opponent.''

CPP gained a 2-0 lead into intermission and appeared on its way to a 3-game sweep. But Ashland fired a collective .321 attack percentage in Game 3 and cut the Broncos' lead.

But CPP gained an early advantage in the fourth and final game. It grabbed a 20-7 lead, thanks to three kills from senior setter Jasmine Davis (Pomona) and six attack errors from Ashland.

Davis finished with an efficient 6-1-8 on the attack with 36 assists, seven digs and two block assists.

McNeese was strong for the second straight night. The Torrance sophomore had 12 kills/4 errors in 24 attacks with four digs and two block assists.

All told, CPP had 14 block assists and finished the evening with 47 kills/19 errors in 111 attacks, good for a .252 attack percentage.

The Broncos return to play at 1 p.m. Saturday against Seattle Pacific.

Ellen Grenert had a match-high 14 kills and teammate Brittany Snider had 13 for the Eagles.
