BELMONT – A trip to northern California turned into a successful weekend for the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team.
Senior
Miguel Abascal (Guatemala City, Guatemala) scored on two penalty kicks including the game-winner in double overtime as the Broncos defeated host Notre Dame de Namur 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The victory places CPP at 2-0 overall as it prepares for its home opener against Montana State-Billings on Friday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at the practice field adjacent to Kellogg Field.
Sunday's victory was a sweet one as Broncos coach
Lance Thompson returned to the site where he coached for the last two years. In 2008, he coached the Argos to the NCAA Tournament and according to Thompson, the Broncos faced a “playoff-type'' atmosphere Sunday.
“(NDNU) worked extremely hard and were prepared to face us in every way,'' he said. “But what really impressed me was how we responded. We were disciplined throughout. We were organized on defense and patience for our spots.''
Abascal scored both of goals via the penalty kick and both were set up teammate
Tyler Reinhart. The Fresno native drew both penalty kicks and Abascal got them both to count. Trailing 1-0, Abascal scored on the PK in the 36th minute.
Seventy minutes later, Abascal again had the opportunity to score on a PK, drawn from Reinhart. And just like the first, Abascal got it to count.
