POMONA – Senior Andrea Salerno made sure her return to the CPP women's soccer team Friday was extra special.
The Chino Hills native, who missed the season's first six games due to a leg injury, saw her first action of the year and turned it into a game-winning effort. Her goal in the game's 85th minute spelled the difference for Cal Poly Pomona in its 2-1 victory over always-difficult Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Salerno has been a steady presence for CPP in her four-year career in 55 games. The goal was her fourth in her career.
The Broncos improved to 6-1-0 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA, while SSU dropped to 3-3-1, 1-1-1.
On a day where temperatures reached above 100 degrees, Salerno came off the bench midway in the first half. She got the job done when sophomore Justine Barclay brought the ball down on the left sideline. She worked the ball over to Salerno, who fired past SSU goalkeeper Courtney Grixti's left side and found the back of the net.
It was Salerno's only shot of the game.
Reserve Carolyn Rubendall put CPP on the scoreboard in the first half. After entering the game at the 18:06 mark, she made an immediate impact 52 seconds later. Senior Mary Carroll passed the ball over to Rubendall, who was stationed just in front of the net and punched it past Grixti.
For the next 40 minutes, CPP held on to its one-goal lead, but the Seawolves did not go away quietly. At the 59th minute, Tracy Webster picked up a loose ball and scored past Broncos' goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez and the game was tied at 1-1.
Gutierrez earned her first start of the season and came up big. She had six saves in seven SOG faced. Her counterpart, Grixti, had fives saves in seven shots faced.
The Broncos outshot SSU 14-9. Carroll totaled four shots, while sophomore Callie Wilson had three shots with one SOG.
The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Sunday when they take on Humboldt State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
