POMONA
– It turned out to be a game of two halves for the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer game Sunday against Humboldt State.

The Broncos controlled the first half and earned a 2-1 lead at halftime. But the Broncos mustered just one SOG in the game's final 45 minutes and the visiting Lumberjacks took advantage with two goals and earned a 3-2 victory before a crowd of 140 fans at steamy Kellogg Field.

CPP owns a 6-2 overall mark and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as it now prepares for Friday's home game against UC San Diego. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.

CPP found itself trailing early, giving up a free kick from the Lumberjacks' Arielle Kern just two minutes and 37 seconds into the game.

But the Broncos tied up the game in a hurry as senior Cody McClure drove in on the left side after receiving the ball from fellow senior Mary Carroll just three minutes later. McClure worked the ball to the left side of HSU's goalkeeper Kelly Sandberg and the game was tied at 1-1.

It was McClure's fourth goal on the year, tops with Carroll on the team.

It remained a tie game until the 28th minute when sophomore Valerie Strawn struck with her third goal on the season. She went one-on-one from the left against Sandberg and fired it right and CPP led 2-1.

But the big story in the second half was HSU's comeback. The Lumberjacks out-shot the Broncos 7-2 in the final 45 minutes and earned goals from Katie Forba and the game-winner from Kern.

Forba was way out front on the left side of CPP goalkeeper Nakisha Gutierrez and punched it across on a feed from teammate Kylie Riebe.

And then Kern earned her second goal of the game and again it was on a free kick at the 75th minute.

The Broncos' had nine total shots – all from different players – and five SOG, but just one SOG in the second half.

Gutierrez had just one save on the day.
