CPP loses in tight match against No. 15 Sonoma State

– Cal Poly Pomona stood right up to the end against No. 15 Sonoma State, but fell short in a 3-1 loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball Friday afternoon.

Senior Elizabeth Diaz led the Broncos with 15 kills on five errors and 33 total attacks (.303) and freshman Lindsey Poulos contributed 10 kills on four errors in 19 attacks (.316) in the Seawolves' 26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 24-26 defeat.

The Broncos fell to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the CCAA, while SSU improved to 13-1 and 5-1.

Cal Poly Pomona took the Seawolves to the brink, losing two games in extended play. The Broncos fired .333 in Game 1, but were turned back by SSU's .462 in the opener.

The Broncos came right back in Game 2, grabbing the lead for good at 9-8. The Broncos ran off four straight points with Poulos' bearing down with three consecutive kills and Diaz polished off one and CPP led 12-8.

Poulos later added a pair of service aces and CPP led 22-12 before going on to record the Game 2 win.

SSU came back in Game 3 with a .250 attack percentage to go up 2-1 before the fourth and final game that again went extras.

The Broncos led 12-7, but SSU climbed on a 7-2 run to tie the game for the first time at 14-14.

The game would be tied seven times before SSU got command. Tied at 24-24, kills from Allyson Sather and Sarah Killingworth earned the win for SSU, its first victory in Pomona since the 2001 season.

Keala Peterson led SSU with 18 kills (18/7/38) and Sather added 16 kills (16/9/31). SSU finished the match with a .311 attack percentage (58/21/119).

CPP returns to Darlene May Gym on Saturday night when its takes on Humboldt State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
