CPP bounces back with 3-1 win over Humboldt State

Diaz established career-high 19 kills in win

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona shook off a tough week with a sound, all-round match against visiting Humboldt State that culminated in a 3-1 Broncos volleyball victory before a crowd of 278 at Darlene May Gym on Saturday night.

The victory snapped CPP's three-match losing streak and it improved to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Senior Elizabeth Diaz led the Broncos with a career-best 19 kills, four block assists and a pair of service aces in CPP's 25-19, 25-8, 21-25, 25-20 victory over the Lumberjacks (6-9, 2-5).

Coach Rosie Wegrich received excellent efforts from a host of Broncos – freshman Diana Lake had three service aces to go with nine kills, freshman Taylr Kreutziger reached double figures in kills with 10 and sophomore Karissa Lagmay had 19 digs.

The victory culminated a tough week of play for CPP, which lost to No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday and were turned back by No. 15 Sonoma State on Friday – a match that featured two losses of 26-24.

CPP opened play on fire as senior Audrey Driscoll opened with a pair of service aces and it led 5-0.

The Broncos went on to lead 19-12 and added to the lead on three service aces from Lake that put CPP in command in winning Game 1.

CPP maintained its momentum in Game 2 with a 14-4 cushion. CPP fired .407 in the game (14-3-27) with four kills from Lindsey Poulos.

But Humboldt State showed its ability to come back with a sound Game 3 win. HSU led throughout most of the game, but CPP tied the game at 17-17. After a tie at 18-18, two kills from Oceana Matsubu put HSU on top and it went on to earn a 25-21 win.

Game 4 belonged to CPP from the outset. It never trailed despite two ties (10-10 and 12-12). Kruetziger had five kills in the game that featured 17 total kills from CPP.

Matsubu led HSU with eight kills as the Lumberjacks finished 26-17-115 (.078).

The victory marked CPP's sixth straight over HSU and improved to 15-1 all-time against HSU.

CPP returns to Darlene May Gym on Friday night with a match against Cal State Dominguez Hills. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
