Broncos go 1-3 at Skyhawk Invitational

CPP earns 3-2 win over Dixie in tourney finale

DURANGO, Colo. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team ended its trip Saturday to the Rocky Mountains on a top note when the Broncos earned a five-game victory over Dixie State of St. George, Utah, in the final match of four played at the Skyhawk Invitational, hosted by Fort Lewis College. 

The Broncos' secured a 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12 victory over the Red Storm to go 1-3 in the two-day tourney. The Broncos lost a pair on Friday (vs. UC Colorado Springs and Fort Lewis) and lost their opening match Saturday to Adams State. 

The Broncos, who are now 3-4 overall, begin the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association season Friday night when they play host to conference newcomer Cal State East Bay. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Darlene May Gym

Cal Poly Pomona found itself trailing 2-0 and needed to earn a Game 3 victory to give the Broncos a shot at winning. And that's exactly what happened. 

The Broncos took a 24-17 lead on junior Courtney Alberi's kill. But the Red Storm got back on a service error and four straight attack errors to pull within two at 24-22. Freshman Lindsey Poulos  got the job done with a kill to earn the win and earn necessary momentum. 

In Game 4, the Broncos trailed 22-18 and were on the brink. But a kill from senior Elizabeth Diaz  and three straight Red Storm attack errors put CPP tied up at 22 apiece.
After a DSC timeout, CPP grabbed the lead on a ball handling error and a block assist from Alberi and Poulos. 

And at game point, Poulos again finished the job with a kill and CPP tied the match to force Game 5.
The Broncos trailed 10-6, but again fought back. A kill from senior Jasmine Davis, a block assist from Poulos and Davis, a kill from Diaz and another Poulos/Davis block tied the game at 10-10. Each team traded a point, before CPP finished the game for the win. 

Freshman Taylr Kreutziger and Davis teamed up on a block and Davis and Diaz fired off kills to forge ahead 14-11. A service error from CPP cut the lead to two, but Kreutziger earned the game and match winner with a kill. 

Diaz led the Broncos with 18 kills, with Alberi at 14 and Poulos at 12 and a team-leading 10 block assists. Davis had eight block assists and 53 kills. 

Adams State 3, Broncos 0

Poulos led CPP with six kills and Diaz had five, but the Broncos fired a 21/24/90 effort in the three-game defeat. 

CPP had 13 attack errors in the opening game to fall behind early and Adams State rode the momentum to the win. 

Darcy Jennings had 13 kills to pace the Grizzlies.

The Broncos had five players with double figures in kills led by Poulos' 13, but the Broncos found themselves just short of the victory. 

In Game 5, Diaz gave CPP a 12-9 lead with a kill. But the Skyhawks rallied with three straight points to tie the game at 12-12. A kill from Alberi pushed CPP ahead by one, but Fort Lewis took advantage with a kill, a CPP attack error and a block assist for the win. 

Alberi and Diaz each had 12 kills, while junior Kellie Hall  had 11 and sophomore Kristin McNeese had 10. 

UC Colorado Springs 3, Broncos 1 
Box Score
McNeese led the Broncos with 13 kills and Alberi added 11, but after they earned a Game 1, UCCS rallied with three wins to earn the match. 

But 26 attack errors and nine service errors hampered CPP's efforts.
