Wildcats rally after trailing by 18 points in first half

CHICO – Chico State overcame an 18-point deficit and behind the outside shooting of Jon Baird upset No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona 72-70 in overtime Sunday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball. 

The Broncos saw their five-game winning streak end and their school-record defensive mark of five straight games holding their opponent to 50 points or less. 

CPP, now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA return to Kellogg Gym for its five-game home stand beginning against Sonoma State on Friday night. 

Baird scored 23 points and hit seven 3-pointers for the win. 

All five Broncos starters scored in double figures. Junior Donnelle Booker led the way with 17 points with 12 rebounds – his second double-double in his career. Senior Austin Swift was next with 15 and junior Tobias Jahn had 11. Senior guard Dahir Nasser and sophomore forward Dwayne Fells each scored 10. 

CPP built a 33-17 halftime lead and held the Wildcats to just 5-of-19 shooting. 

Swift's 3-pointer with 3:44 remaining in the game put CPP ahead, 57-43, but Chico State battled back. The Wildcats outscored CPP 16-2 and the game went into overtime when Zach Graves scored a layup with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. 

The game was tied five times in OT. Booker tied the game with 1:08 remaining at 68-68. 

Graves pushed Chico State ahead with the first of two free throws. Teammate Rodrick Hawkins earned the offensive rebound after Graves' second shot and Jay Flores went to the foul line after Swift committed his fifth foul. 

Flores hit both shots to put the Wildcats up 71-68 with 30 seconds left. Jahn answered on the Broncos' next possession with a layup, but Hawkins answered with a free throw, giving the Wildcats a 72-70 lead with 18 seconds remaining. 

Booker attempted the game-winner with a 3-point effort with four seconds, but the shot was off and Mitchel Anderson's put-back did not go down. 

Chico State is now 7-2 and 3-1. 

BRONCO NOTES: Booker's double-double was his first since scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds vs. CSU Monterey Bay (2/1/08)... His 12 rebounds are a career high... The last time the Broncos had five players in double figures was last season's win at home against Cal State Stanislaus (1/3/09)... Baird's 23 points are a season-best scored against CPP.
