Box Score
POMONA, Calif. – The score between the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team and the 21st-ranked UC San Diego squad stayed 0-0 through the first 57 minutes but the Tritons struck with a header at 57:09, with the goal holding up as the game-winning score.
The Broncos drop to 6-6-3 overall and 4-6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Tritons improve to 11-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 through league play. With Friday's win, UCSD extends its unbeaten streak to 10 games.
The CPP attack ended up outshooting the visiting Tritons, 14-7, and the Broncos forced UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong to make eight saves on the evening. In the end though, a header from Alexa Enlow off a cross from Annette Ilg stood as the match's lone goal for the Tritons.
In the first half, the Broncos built a couple of close chances in the midway point of the period. With about 21 minutes gone, Jennifer Rivera sprinted into the box with the ball and ripped a hard shot that bounced to Armstrong. The ball caromed out of Armstrong's arms for a split second as Valerie Strawn came rushing in, but the netminder grabbed it just in time.
Roughly five minutes later, Justine Barclay lifted a short shot from the left side over Armstrong's head nicely but UCSD defender Hayley Johnson stood on the end line and sent the ball back out for the team save.
After the Tritons struck in the 58th minute to give themselves a 1-0 lead, the Broncos didn't back down. With 10 minutes left in regulation, Rivera again combined for another chance and turned at the top of the box to fire a hard shot straight to Armstrong.
In the end, CPP suffered its third-straight loss as the last two defeats have come with one-goal margins.
Up next, the Broncos will host Cal State East Bay Sunday at 2 p.m. The CPP squad will be celebrating Senior Day at Kellogg Field.
