POMONA, Calif. – Despite the match being tied 1-1 at intermission, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team rallied for three second-half scores en route to the 4-1 victory Sunday over Cal State East Bay.
Before the game, the Broncos honored the achievements of seniors Britany Garrett, Stephanie Sandino and Miya Quinn.
CPP improves to 7-6-3 overall and 5-6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSUEB falls to 6-8-3 overall and 4-8-2 in league play.
Junior forward Jennifer Rivera got the Broncos' offense going early, as CPP struck for a score in the 15th minute. On the play, Justine Barclay led Rivera into the box with a pass and Rivera finished it with a well-placed shot into the far left corner of the net.
About 11 minutes later, the Pioneers bounced back to tie the match. Sophomore midfielder Kara Yamomoto sent a corner kick into the box, and freshman Gail Bassett deposited a header past Broncos' goalkeeper Sarah Rohman.
Despite losing the lead and being outshot 7-3 in the opening period, the Broncos found their rhythm in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Valerie Strawn ripped a shot off the crossbar and Barclay followed with the rebound header to give CPP a 2-1 advantage.
Just about six minutes later, Tiffany Rogers found Rivera with a pass toward the top of the box and Rivera finished the play with another shot into the left corner of the net.
Callie Wilson recorded the match's final goal, as she knocked home a shot after receiving a pass from Carolyn Rubendall. The Pioneers ended with a slight 11-10 shot advantage, with Rohman closing the match with six saves.
CPP will close out the regular season with road matches at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. next weekend.
