POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team started the second half of their California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule in fine fashion on Friday afternoon with a 4-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The four goals scored marked their season best, with four different Broncos getting in on the scoring action. With the win Cal Poly Pomona moves to 6-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the CCAA.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead less than ten minutes into Friday's contest, after a corner deflected through the box and Justin Barclay hit the rebound chance in for her second goal of the season. # Jennifer Rivera stretched Cal Poly Pomona's advantage to 2-0 in the 37th minute with a solid shot from 20 yards out off the assist from Britany Garrett#.
Neither team could find the net early in the second half. Monterey Bay finally broke through the Cal Poly Pomona defense when Gabriella Bozzo scored for the Otters in the 74th minute. Less than five minutes later the Otters scored again when Marlina Massagli scored to tie the game at 2-2.
The Broncos responded quickly when Valarie Strawn took a high looping shot from 50 yards out that sailed over the head of the goalkeeper giving Cal Poly Pomona a 3-2 lead with less than ten minutes to play . Angela Garcia also joined the second half scoring barrage. Garcia utilized her speed, passing a defender and beating the goalkeeper near post for her first goal of the season and her career.
“This team showed great character today, stepping up after the game was tied,” Broncos' head coach Isabelle Harvey said. “I was really pleased with everyone's effort after facing some adversity.”
Up next, Cal Poly Pomona will host CCAA North Division leader San Francisco State on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Gators hold an overall record of 7-2-2 and are 6-2-1 in CCAA play.
