The Cal Poly Pomona men's tennis teams begins its 2010 edition this weekend with its annual trip to the Phoenix area as the Broncos take part in the multi-team Presidents' Day Duals, sponsored by Grand Canyon University and held at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.
Head Coach Sandy Kriezel welcomes back four returners from last year's squad that went 7-11. Seniors #
Joshua Lau#, #
Justin Gong#, #
James Lee and junior Salvador Romero# will carry the foundation, but a talented blend of newcomers, led by junior #
Robby Dabbs# give Kriezel all sorts of good feelings.
Lau returns for his fourth season and has the most game experience at the Division II level. Last season the Chino Hills native played the entire year at No. 1 singles where he went 6-10 and owns a career mark of 23-25. He has been one of the more acclaimed academic honored student-athletes during Kriezel's tenure and as one can expect, is known for his cerebral style of play.
Lau also played a substantial portion of 2009 in doubles where he owned a combined record of 10-8.
Gong saw action in just six matches in 2009, going 3-3 with the majority of play at No. 6 singles.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of 2009 was the play of Lee, who went .500 in six matches and finished 3-2 at No. 6. He also saw some play in doubles and fashioned a 3-5 overall mark.
Since stepping onto the court as a freshman, Romero has made a steady impression and is known for consistent play, He was one of two players to record a winning overall record in singles where he enjoyed a 9-8 record, going 7-5 at No. 2. He played all 18 matches in doubles and went 6-9 at No. 1 doubles with Joe Madoo and 1-1 with Josh Lau.
Earning the nod at No. 1 singles is Dabbs, who transferred from NAIA Azusa Pacific. The Fallbrook native posted a 5-3 overall mark in singles play and went 4-0 in conference matches. He was 8-6 in doubles matches, going 4-5 at No. 1. In 2008, he was 8-2 overall in singles play that included 4-2 at No. 6 and 19-6 in doubles play that included a 12-4 record at No. 3.
Kriezel has high hopes as well for junior #
Shane McNulty#, who is penciled in at No. 4 singles. While at Ventura College, he played on two state title teams while manning No.6 singles both seasons.
#
Keith Boggero# looks to see plenty of time in the singles lineup at No. 5. At El Camino College, he played No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in his two-year career. He reached regionals in singles and doubles as a sophomore and made the Round of 16 in the prestigious Ojai Tournament.
Freshman #
Kevin Singer# also should see plenty of time in singles play, particularly at No. 6 along with Lee. Singer, who grew up in suburban Dallas, was a four-time district champion and four-time regional qualifier.
Others who round the Broncos squad include freshman #
Dom Plata#, a four-year letter winner at Granada Hills High School.
CPP is the only sport at CPP that does not compete in a conference. It will play eight matches against NCAA Division II regional opponents that include the season's first two matches in Phoenix.
The Broncos will play host to NCAA Division III power Redlands in their home opener on Feb. 20.
