POMONA
-- Sophomore RHP Geoff Broussard threw 7 1/3 solid innings and received support from Broncos closer Joshua Krist as Cal Poly Pomona defeated visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 4-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA, while the Otters are 2-10, 1-6. The two teams close the four-game series Sunday morning at 12 p.m.

The Alta Loma native pitched well for Mike Ashman's squad. He allowed only two hits through seven innings -- a solo home run by Jacob Flores in the fourth and a bunt single by Nolan Murray in the sixth.

Broussard was taken out in the seventh inning with one out after he had thrown 100 pitches. He opened the inning on a groundout, but gave up consecutive singles to Thomas George and Brent Sargenti.

Reliever Travis Kelly walked Murray to load the bases. But he got out of a big-time jam when Ronnie Fhurong lined out to second and second baseman Marcus Makia raced to second and forced out Sargenti, who left early.

The Otters threatened again in the ninth, but couldn't break through. Kelly gave up a single to Tyler Young and forced Flores out on a pop-up to first.

But Kelly gave up back-to-back singles and the Otters loaded the bases with one out.

Krist came on and struck out Peter Estes looking, then ended the game when he struck out George on a full-count fastball. It was the Petaluma's second save of the season.

CPP took control with a two-run first inning. Makia's two-out single to left scored Travis Taijeron (walk) and Jenzen Torres (hit by pitch).

The Broncos added two more in the third on two hits and two CSUMB errors. Michael Neff singled through the right side to score Torres, who reached on an error. Manny Navarro added the last run on the day when he reached on an error that scored Makia, who singled.

Makia and Neff each had two hits.

Flores hit his solo shot in the fourth on a first-pitch fastball inside.
