POMONA – Four players scored in double figures and Cal Poly Pomona was led by senior
Stephisha Walton's 14 points and 10 rebounds as the second-seeded Broncos dominated visiting Cal State San Bernardino 63-46 in the first-round of the CCAA Tournament played Tuesday night.
Walton, who earlier in the day was named first-team All-CCAA, nearly secured a double-double in the first half as the Broncos built a double-digit lead 10 minutes into the game and never let the lead drop below 10 points against CSUSB, which finished its season 13-15.
CPP (22-5 overall) will face third-seeded Chico State (20-8) on Friday as the tourney now turns to Arcata and host Humboldt State. The teams will play in the 12:30 p.m. semifinal with top-seeded UC San Diego (25-3) playing the host Lumberjacks (17-10) at 3 p.m.
The semifinal winners will play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with an NCAA Tournament automatic berth on the line.
CPP, winners of six straight, 10 of 11 and 18 of its last 21 games, was dominant inside the paint as it outscored the Coyotes 32-12 for the game.
Senior Krystal Urzua scored a game-high 18 points for CSUSB, but she didn't receive much help from her teammates as no other player scored more than seven points. Take away Urzua's 8 of 14 performance from the floor and CSUSB was just a combined 11 for 47 from the field.
Walton produced her second double-double in the last three games, her ninth this season and 14th in her two-year career. She was joined by junior first-team All-CCAA selection
Reyana Colson with 12 and second-team choice
Megan Ford and junior La'kenya Simon-West, who each had 10.
Eleven of the 12 players who dressed for Scott Davis' team scored. The Broncos were 21-of-47 from the floor and held their opponent to less than 50 points for the fifth time in the last six games.
BRONCO NOTES: Colson moved up the career scoring chart as she now ranks 14th with 1,221 points. She began the day ranked 16th and surpassed Anna James (1,218 – 1999-03) and Carolyn Topf (1,219 – 76-80)… She is 62 points behind No. 13 Diane Looker (1,282 – 1980-84)… When the Broncos fire 40 percent from the floor this season, they are 13-1… Leading at the halftime break also has been a good sign for Davis' team as they are 18-1 when they lead after the opening 20 minutes… The first time CPP played CSUSB this season, the Broncos also won by a 63-46 margin in the game played at Kellogg Gym… The victory was Davis' 50th in his three seasons. He holds a record of 50-35 at CPP and 131-55 all-time that includes his three seasons at Dominican (2002-05)… The Broncos look to tie for their most wins in six seasons Friday night when they go for No. 23… Cal Poly Pomona owns two wins over Chico State this year. The Broncos won at Chico State on Jan. 3 (65-63) and defeated the Wildcats 53-48 in Pomona. The Broncos have never beaten the Wildcats three times in one season.
