Broncos earn weekend split with 13-8 win Sunday

HAYWARD -- Home runs by Jenzen Torres, Marcus Makia and Travis Taijeron paved the way in Cal Poly Pomona's 13-8 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball.

The Broncos, now 22-23 overall and 14-18 in the CCAA complete their home schedule this weekend when they take on Cal State Stanislaus (19-22, 15-17). The series begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday with a nine-inning contest, followed by Saturday's doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.

Sunday's game marks Senior Day as the Broncos will honor their 12 seniors in a pregame ceremony.

The Broncos never trailed in their game despite being out-hit 18-13. CPP showed its competitiveness with three runs on five hits in the first. The Broncos sent eight men to the plate in the opening frame with Stephen Gonzalez, Taijeron and Erik Riedel contributing RBI-singles.

Leading 3-1 after two innings, Makia lifted a one out, two-run HR to left center and CPP had a 5-1 advantage.

The Pioneers cut the lead to 5-3 after three, but Torres came through with a 3-run  HR in the fourth and CPP led 8-3.

CSUEB answered with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth as CPP led 8-7 through five innings.

Makia pushed CPP ahead 9-7 with a sacrifice fly that scored Tyson Edwards, who reached base on a leadoff single.

Makia added his fourth RBI on the day with a run-scoring single in the eighth. One batter later, Taijeron responded with a two-run homer as CPP led 12-7.

Torres added an RBI-double in the ninth for his fourth RBi on the day.

Reliever Keith Powers (4-2) earned the win in 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out two, issued two walks and did not allow a run. He scattered three hits.
