POMONA -- Senior RHP
Travis Kelly threw the game of his one-season career with Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos' offense could not get anything on-track Friday and it proved costly in a 1-0 loss to Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball.
The Broncos fell to 22-24 overall and 14-19 in the CCAA, while the visiting Warriors improved to 20-22, 16-17.
Kelly, who began his career at Cal State Fullerton, threw no-hit ball through four innings. He gave up just two hits in 7 innings and struck out seven with four walks.
The Warriors scored the game's only run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Casey Filkins reached base on a walk. Andrew Graves then followed with a sinking pop fly to center field for a single. But CPP's
Travis Taijeron bobbled the ball while trying to get a handle. Filkins scored from third and Graves reached second on the single with a one-base error.
Twice the Broncos had the bases loaded, but couldn't put a run across. They finished with 11 left on base.
In the third inning,
Jordan Alcantar reached on a hit by pitch and
Manny Navarro was walked to lead off the inning. But consecutive flyouts by
Robert Palmer and
Tyson Edwards kept the runners at bay.
Jenzen Torres loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, but
Stephen Gonzalez ended the inning when he flew out to center.
One inning later, the Broncos again loaded the bases with just one out.
Taijeron and
Erik Riedel reached on consecutive singles and Alcantar reached base on a walk.
But Navarro grounded out in an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Broncos threatened again in the sixth. Taijeron led off with a walk and reached third on Riedel's single that ended Warriors starter Vinny Pacchetti's day.
Navarro then missed the ball on a squeeze play off Warriors reliever Leonard Giammanco and Taijeron was called out on a 2-5-1 rundown.
Riedel finished with two hits -- both singles, while Edwards also had a single.
The two teams play at noon Saturday with a doubleheader.
