POMONA -- Ethan Chapman's 3-run homer in the second inning gave visiting Cal State San Bernardino the lead for good Thursday as the Coyotes defeated Cal Poly Pomona 6-4 on a sparkling spring day in Southern California.
The Broncos are an even 19-19 overall and 11-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Coyotes improved to 19-12 and 18-11.
CSUSB struck with two runs in the first on three hits, but the Broncos fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in their half of the first.
With two outs and
Travis Taijeron on first with a single, sophomore
Jenzen Torresconnected on his 10th home run of the season with a blast to left center.
But Chapman, who finished a triple short of the cycle, ripped a shot to right and the Coyotes led 5-2.
CPP cut the lead to 5-3 in the second.
Tyson Edwards earned a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Manny Navarro, who singled.
But Coyotes starter Aaron Brooks was effective and the Broncos had trouble leaving men on base. They had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth, but
Stephen Gonzalez flew out to right and
David Jaques grounded out to end the threat.
The Broncos scored a single run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Marcus Makia, who reached on a hit by pitch, scored on a wild pitch.
But the Coyotes earned an insurance run in the eighth on Brent Planck's RBI-single that scored pinch runner Drew Peterson.

Travis Kelly (1-3) took the loss. The Alta Loma native threw seven innings and gave up eight hits, six runs (all earned), walked five and struck out two.
Brooks earned the win with three strikeouts and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.
The two teams resume the series Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field, First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
