POMONA
-- Cal Poly Pomona did not have an answer against CSU San Bernardino's starting pitcher Brandon Cunniff, who threw a five-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over the Broncos in California Collegiate Athletic Assocation baseball Friday afternoon.

The Broncos are 19-20 overall and 11-15 in the CCAA, while the visiting Coyotes are 20-12, 19-11.

Cunniff, who improved to 5-2, retired 19 of the final 20 batters faced in the game that took just 2 hours and 17 minutes. After giving up consecutive singles to Tyson Edwards and Travis Taijeron in the third inning, he did not allow a Bronco past first base the remainder of the game.

After Cody Madison grounded out into a double play that scored Julio Torres, the game remained 1-0 until the fifth inning. Four straight singles off Broncos starter Casey Yokubaitis to Cody Madison, Bryant Veiga, Andrew Harrison and Ryan Hulbert resulted in a three-run inning.

The Coyotes added single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Edwards had two hits for the Broncos -- both singles and Taijeron, Marcus Makia and Stephen Gonzalez each singled.

Broncos starting shortstop Erik Riedel was thrown out of the game in the sixth inning and Edwards was tossed upon completion of the game.

Yokubaitis fell to 2-2 on the season. He threw five innings with 78 pitches and struck out one, did not issue a walk and hit two batters. He gave up eight hits and three of his four runs were earned.

The teams complete the weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday at CSUSB's Fiscalini Field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
