Broncos sweep Sonoma State

CPP concludes 2010 on Sunday

ROHNERT PARK -- A five-run sixth inning  that took just one hit in Saturday's opener put Cal Poly Pomona on its way to earning a doubleheader sweep over host Sonoma State, as the Broncos defeated the Seawolves 7-6 and 8-4.

The Broncos, now 26-26 overall and 18-21 in the CCAA, will conclude the season Sunday against SSU (23-28, 16-23).

Trailing 3-2 entering the sixth, CPP took command on poor pitching from SSU.

Cal Poly Pomona came up big at the plate with the bases loaded. Erik Riedel earned an RBI after being hit by a pitch and the Broncos earned another run when David Jaques was issued a bases- loaded walk.

Junior Joe Villa then ripped a two-run single down the right-field line.

Travis Taijeron and Villa, each had two RBI hits for Cal Poly Pomona. Starting RHP Jarett Attard (3-2) allowed only one earned run (four runs total) over five and one-third innings of work. 

Senior RHP Joshua Krist picked up his single-season record seventh save in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and giving up two hits.

The Broncos scored eight unanswered runs and held on for the win.

Down 1-0 after the first inning, Cal Poly Pomona put up two runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Taijeron again came up with the big bat, hitting homers in the fifth and seventh innings and becoming CPP's single-season HR leader with 16.

Taijeron led at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. 

Senior Richard McDowell also went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. He connected on his third homer of the season -- a solo shot -- in the seventh.

Riedel had a pair of singles.

Sophomore Geoff Broussard (7-3) went the distance giving up nine hits, four runs and striking out six.
