BOX SCORE: CSU Monterey Bay 3, Broncos 0
POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona battled two tight games against visiting Cal State Monterey before going down to defeat 3-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball Saturday night at Darlene May Gym.
The Broncos, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA, resume their schedule this week when they play host to NAIA power Cal Baptist on Wednesday night. First serve is at 6:00 p.m.
Freshman
Jessica Doerner (Redondo Beach) led the Broncos with 13 kills in 29 attempts. For the match, the Broncos had a difficult time on the attack, hitting .085 with 23 attack errors.
The Otters earned the 27-25, 25-20, 25-18 victory with Rheann Fall leading the way with a match-high 16 kills. Teammate Lauren Shacklock was right behind with 14 kills.
The two teams played competitively through the first two games, but CPP couldn't get the upperhand.
In Game 1, the teams were tied at 11-11 before CSUMB opened up a 7-1 run to lead 18-12. A pair of service aces and three CPP attack errors were key.
But the Broncos fought gamely and ran off an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at 20-20. Kills from
Taylr Kreutziger (Villa Park) and
Kristin McNeese (Torrance) and an ace from freshman
Katie Colin (Torrance) led the way.
Trailing 24-21, CPP rallied to tie the game on an Otter service error, a
Diana Lake (Covina) kill and another CSUMB attack error.
Each team traded kills before CSUMB closed the game with a CPP service error and an attack error from Lake.
In Game 2, the Broncos had 14 kills and boasted a .353 percentage, but CSUMB one-upped them in the attack department with a .455 effort on the strength of 18 kills.
A negative attack percentage of -.111 cost the Broncos any chance of cutting into CSUMB's lead.
Colin led CPP with 31 assists on the night, while McNeese and Kreutziger each had three block assists.
