POMONA -- A 13-minute offensive flurry put Cal Poly Pomona in complete command as the Broncos opened the 2010 season with a 3-0 victory over nonconference foe Notre Dame de Namur on a day where temperatures reached into the 100s at Kellogg Field.
All three goals were scored from this past year's recruiting class and the Broncos outplayed their visitors from get-go.
A scoreless first half that saw CPP out-shoot 6-3 put the teams at 0-0 at halftime. But once the second half began, coach Lance Thompson's crew went to work.
Junior
Sam Morales got things going in the 48th minute. He fired a shot from 40 yards out on the deep left side and drove it past Argos' goalkeeper Isiah Castro's right side for the goal. Freshman
Sean Sweeney was credited with the assist.
Seven minutes later, junior
Luis Gonzalez, the 2009 Junior College Player of the Year, found himself in front of the net and punched it through on a feed from Morales.
Then, for good measure, junior
Anthony Salcedo gave his team a three-goal cushion when he picked up a loose ball and took in from the left side to the right from 25 yards.
Junior Tony Iniguez earned the win victory in goal. He replaced starter
Andrew Todd to begin the second half. Iniguez earned the victory with four saves. Todd didn't face a shot in the opening 45 minutes.
The Broncos out-shot NDNU 18-8 and had the advantage on corner kicks at 12-3. Gonzalez had four shots -- three SOG -- and Salcedo totaled three shots.
CPP completes the weekend with an 11:30 a.m. start against visiting Dominican on Saturday.
