POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team celebrated the accomplishments of 16 senior student-athletes prior to the Sunday regular season home finale against Chico State. Unfortunately, it was a visiting senior that stole the spotlight in the end as Ferid Celosmanovic scored a game-winner in overtime to upend the host Broncos.
The Broncos, at 9-4-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), drop back into a tie with Cal State Dominguez Hills for first place in the South Division. CPP travels to challenge the Toros of CSUDH on Friday at 7 p.m.
Neither team could generate much of a scoring chance in the opening half, while CSUC outshot the Broncos 10-5 in that span. Just four of those 15 attempts landed on target.
In the second period though, things opened up for both offenses. In the 51st minute, a give and go between
Boris Beta and
Abraham Gomez led to a shot from Gomez that bent just to the right of the net.
Only a few minutes later, Beta and Gomez combined once again to send a ball into the box for teammate
Fabian Perez, who lined his shot to the left of the frame. On the other end, Broncos' goalkeeper
Andrew Todd did his part to keep the game scoreless when the Wildcats' Micah Miranda broke though past a CPP defender into the box. Todd quickly came out to cut down the angle and he made a tremendous foot save on Miranda's shot.
In the 77th minute,
Jonathan Enns helped the Broncos generate another scoring opportunity. Deep in the right corner, he spun and passed the ball back to
Sam Morales. With a quick dribble to his right, Morales sent a hard shot to the near post. Diving to make the stop though was CSUC keeper James Stroud.
The match progressed into overtime but it didn't take long for the Wildcats to ruin the Senior Day party. On a through ball to the right side of the box by Nick Tedrow, CSUC top scorer Celosmanovic placed a hard shot to the right of Todd to lift the visitors to the 1-0 overtime win.
Luis Gonzalez ended up leading the Broncos in shots with six, while CPP took eight corner kicks to the Wildcats' six. Despite only making one save, Stroud got the shutout for his work in net. Todd finished with seven saves, matching his career high.
With the results Sunday around the league, five different teams stand between 23 and 25 points. The Broncos hold 25, the same amount as CSUDH and Sonoma State.
The conference tournament is held from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The four-team event features the two division winners and the next two teams with the highest point totals, regardless of division.
