LA JOLLA, Calif. – A first-half penalty kick conversion held up Sunday, with the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team suffering a 1-0 setback at UC San Diego in the season finale.

The result settles the Broncos' marks to 9-7-2 overall and 8-6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Tritons wrap up the regular season at 10-8-0 overall and 9-7-0 through conference action.

CPP narrowly falls short of reaching the CCAA Tournament, which will be held in Turlock from Nov. 4 through Nov. 6.

The Broncos put together a solid scoring chance in the 10th minute, when Victor Gutierrez sent a low cross into the box. Ricardo Reyes shielded his defender from the ball and controlled it but his shot attempt landed left of the frame.

On the other end, the host Tritons came close to getting on the scoreboard a few minutes later. UCSD forward Sam Ball won possession in the left corner and dribbled into the box unmarked. His bending shot sailed just over the crossbar.

The CPP offense continued to click, with Fabian Perez sending a through ball into the box for Luis Gonzalez. The breakaway shot attempt for Gonzalez ending up being batted down by Tritons' goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

UCSD narrowly missed a score late in the first half off a corner kick but a header from sophomore defender Alec Arsht bounced off the crossbar and out of play.

The Tritons did break through after being awarded a penalty kick opportunity after a UCSD attacker was pulled down in the box. Cory Wolfrom converted on the attempt to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

Both squads continued to go back and forth in the second half and CPP scratched together a number of chances late. In the 70th minute, Gutierrez and Gonzalez combined for a give and go into the box but a shot from Gutierrez ended up left of the frame.

A few minutes later, Broncos' senior midfielder Nick Costanza fired a hard shot from about 16 yards out but Cohen shifted slightly to his right to make the stop.

With about seven minutes remaining in regulation, CPP senior Russell Vernon lined a short cross from the left into the box. Costanza got a foot on it but the rolling ball was picked up by Cohen.

The final moments brought more close chances but in the end, the host UCSD squad managed to hold off the Broncos.

CPP goalkeeper Anthony Iniguez, making his first start in more than a year, totaled two saves on the afternoon. In the Tritons' net, Cohen collected five stops.
