POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fought a good fight but was unable to defend its four-match winning streak as Sonoma State defeated CPP, 4-1, Friday night in Darlene May Gym.
In the first game of the match, the teams traded points evenly similar to a ping pong ball going back and forth. The Seawolves led the game by no more than two points at a time. The Broncos held a short lead at 20-17 but wasn't able to keep it as SSU won the first game 25-23.
The beginning of the second game was very much like the first as the Broncos kept the Seawolves within three points. CPP gave Sonoma State a scare as they caught up to stay within one point at 18-17 and out hit SSU 14-10 in kills. However, the Seawolves continued to win points to produce the same result as the first game, winning 25-21.
For the first time in the match, the Broncos took the lead early in game three as
Lauren Jones served for four points to make the score 8-2. The Seawolves came alongside CPP to tie up the score 15-15 with multiple back-to-back kills. SSU and the Broncos exchanged kill after kill to bring the score up to 22-19.
CPP reached the first game point at 24-22; however, the Seawolves came back to tie with a kill to make it 24-24. SSU collected match point with a kill forcing head coach
Rosie Wegrich to take a timeout. The Broncos gathered their composure to come out swinging as
Karissa Lagmay slammed the ball down for a kill at 25-25. A pivotal strike came from
Taylr Kreutziger to put the score up 27-26 and with an error from SSU, the Broncos take the third set 28-26.
The start of game four was something that the crowd had seen earlier in the match. The Seawolves took a large and early lead at 13-4. The Broncos took their two timeouts early in the game but weren't able to slow down the Seawolves as they continued their roll to win the fourth game 25-9.
Kreutziger improved her overall statistics as she hit a season high of 14 kills while Jones collected a blocking career high with six in the match.
The Seawolves improved their California Collegiate Athletic Association record to 9-2 and 12-3 overall while the Broncos drop 5-6 league play and 8-7 overall.
The Broncos will face the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State Saturday with the first serve set at 7 p.m. in Darlene May Gym.
