POMONA, Calif. - In a defensive duel before sundown on Sunday to determine supremacy in the division, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team defeated San Francisco State, 2-1, to finish its weekend with a pair of wins against Northern California teams.
The Broncos improve to 7-2-3 overall and 5-2-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play and move up to third in the South Division, just a game behind Cal State L.A.
CPP finishes the season's final homestand with a game on Friday against the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus (5-3-4, 4-3-3 CCAA) and the Wildcats of Chico State (5-4-3, 5-3-2 CCAA). The games kickoff at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Up 1-0 in the 84th minute and fending off an aggressive Gators' offense, junior defender
Angela Garcia passed up the side to Barclay, who passed it through the Gators' defense up the middle to senior forward
Christina Carriaga, who broke away, outmaneuvering junior goalkeeper Annicia Jones before shooting the ball from the top right for the insurance goal of the match.
Carriaga's goal, her first-ever goal with CPP, proved to be the deciding goal when freshman forward Chloe Harrington shot from the top right from 18 yards out to put the Gators on the board in the final minute of play. Harrington received a short pass from sophomore defender Mari Mendizabal, who was credited with the Gators' sole assist in the game.
After a scoreless first half, senior forward
Justine Barclay, upon hitting off of Jones' hands, fired her rebound into the middle of the net to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage in the 51st minute. The play began with junior midfielder
Tiffany Rogers' corner kick, which was followed by senior midfielder
Jennifer Rivera's initial shot-on-goal.
The Broncos and the Gators remained in a duel of kicks and headers throughout the first half.
The closest opportunity the Broncos had prior to the initial goal came in the 42nd minute when sophomore midfielder
Nushin Tasbihchi on the left launched the ball from long range into the upper-right corner of the goal where Jones sprung from the ground and punched it out of play.
CPP outshot SFSU, 7-3, in the first half and for the game, 19-12. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman had four saves and improved to 5-0-1 for the season.
The Gators (7-4-1, 5-4-1 CCAA) drop to fourth in the division with the loss. They next play at home against Chico State on Friday at 3 p.m. and Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday at 2 p.m.
