LA JOLLA, Calif. - Straight off the heels of its thrilling overtime victory against rival Cal State San Bernardino, the eighth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team defeated the Tritons of UC San Diego, 66-52, on Friday night to conclude the 2011 portion of the schedule.
The Broncos improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams. They return home on Thursday to host the Cal State East Bay Pioneers (5-4, 3-2 CCAA). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Kellogg Gym.
Leading the way for the Broncos was junior guard Mitchel Anderson, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Dwayne Fells had 11 points and five rebounds.
While the Tritons played a faster game and proceeded to tie the game twice in the second half, the Broncos never surrendered the lead due to back-to-back layups from Fells and Anderson. Fells' layup was successfully converted to a three-point play.
With the momentum back on their side, the Broncos extended their lead to double digits and had fun in the process. Sophomore guard Terrence Drisdom, Anderson, senior forward Tyquan Brown and senior guard Matt Rosser all had dunks to entertain the Bronco fans in attendance.
En route to a 30-24 halftime lead, Fells led all Broncos with six points at the half while Drisdom grabbed five rebounds on the defensive end.
Redshirt freshman Bryce Brady got things started early for the Broncos, drilling a three-pointer just 29 seconds into the game.
CPP led by as many as 11 with 10:34 remaining in the first half when redshirt sophomore DeRonn Scott's layup off of Rosser's pass made the score, 18-7.
UCSD (5-6, 1-5 CCAA) will play Cal State Stanislaus (7-2, 3-2 CCAA) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
