POMONA, Calif. -
Nothing could go wrong for the Broncos' women's basketball team Friday.

Cal Poly Pomona, ranked at No. 23 in the latest Top 25 poll,  shot a season-high 56 percent from the field and four Bronco players tallied double figures. As the host of the NCAA Division II West Region Tournament, CPP is moving on to the second round after the squad's 71-43 win over Cal State San Bernardino.

The Broncos' defense also had one of its best evenings as well, holding the visiting Coyotes to 26.2-percent shooting, a season-low for a CPP opponent.

The result sets up a 7 p.m. Saturday matchup with Alaska Anchorage. The Seawolves defeated Western Washington Friday, 55-48.

Sarah Semenero notched her first career double-double performance with 13 rebounds and 11 points, while Reyana Colson led all scorers with 21 points. Colson shot 9-for-13 from the floor and added seven rebounds.

“Reyana is Reyana," CPP head coach Danelle Bishop said. "She proved why she's the West Region Player of the Year. She's always a key factor and she might be one of the best defenders in the region. She was scoring, hitting threes, driving to the basket and she was just all over the place defensively.”

La'kenya Simon West and Rosslyn Beard finished as the other two CPP players to post double-digit point totals, at 14 and 10 respectively.

The Broncos jumped out to a 28-9 lead less than 12 minutes into the contest, as that spurt was capped off with back-to-back treys from Beard and then four-straight points by Colson. The senior guard from Compton, Calif., sunk eight of her 10 first-half shots, including a pair in the final two minutes of the period to put CPP ahead 41-22 at intermission.

The hosts' edge shot as high as 30 points when Simon West fired in a three-pointer at the 5:39 mark, lifting the Broncos up 67-37.

Semenero scored the final points of the game, leaving the score at 71-43 in favor of CPP. Saturday's matchup with the Seawolves will be an intriguing one. UAA defeated the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament.
