Box Score
TURLOCK, Calif. - Aiming for a series sweep Sunday against Cal State Stanislaus, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team rallied back from a 5-3 ninth-inning deficit to send the game into extras. The Broncos would fall in the 10th inning though, 6-5, after the Warriors manufactured the final run.
CPP stands at 15-7 overall and 9-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, with the Broncos taking three of four from CSUS in Turlock. The Warriors, ranked 18th nationally, hold similar marks of 14-6 overall and 8-6 through conference play.
The series finale pitted a pitching matchup of CPP's
Ryan Dunn against CSUS starter Vinny Pacchetti. Both hurlers threw well early, as the Warriors carried a slim 1-0 lead through the first five innings. In the sixth though, the offenses came alive.
Taylor Larson opened the Broncos' at-bat with a single and
Ryan Goodman promptly doubled in his teammate to tie the score at 1-1. Later in the inning, slick baserunning by Goodman allowed him to score before the final out was made.
The CPP advantage didn't last long though, as CSUS rallied for three in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. The two teams would pick up one run each in the seventh, with the Broncos' score coming from a
Humberto Tovalin sacrifice fly that scored
Jordan Whitman.
Despite facing a 5-3 hole going into the top of the ninth, the CPP attack didn't back down.
Garett Granato worked a one-out walk and later scored after a wild pitch and Warrior error. Another wild pitch moved
Mike Santora to third base and
Tyson Edwards sent a fly out to leftfield just long ehough to score Santora and even the score at 5-5.
The game didn't progress far into extra innings, as the host CSUS squad took advantage of a trio of Bronco mistakes - a passed ball, a wild pitch and an error - to capture the 6-5 victory.
CPP will take a break for final exams and then return to action for a four-game series with UC San Diego, the 2010 national runner-up squad. The Broncos will play on March 24 and March 25 in La Jolla, before returning for a doubleheader against the Tritons on March 26 at Scolinos Field.
