POMONA, Calif. – Competing in an event carrying the motto of “Where the world's best athletes compete,” the Cal Poly Pomona track and field squads will showcase their talents at this week's Mt. SAC Relays.
So far in the 2011 season, the Broncos have combined for one “A” provisional national qualifier (PNQ) and seven “B” PNQs. CPP will aim to add to that list at this week's competition, which runs on Thursday and Friday at Mt. San Antonio College's Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.
Less than one month remains until the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships, held from May 5 through May 7. Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., will host that event as well as the NCAA Division II National Championships from May 25 to May 28.
Several Broncos are currently featured in the national rankings. Carter Griffin holds the 10th-best time at the D-II level in the 200-meter dash at 21.28. In the 400-meter hurdles, Matt Boudreau (53.63) ranks 20th nationally while Jacob Deavers is close behind in 25th (53.86).
CPP's 4x400 relay on the men's side holds the nation's No. 7 time at 3:12.65, recorded at the Cal Nevada Invitational on March 26.
Lance Walkington, the lone “A” qualifier for the Broncos, is the second-ranked javelin thrower in the nation with a mark of 222-0.
Tiffany Dinh remains the standout on the women's side for CPP, while holding the 15th-best 5,000-meter time at 17:14.30. Mia Moreno has starred in the 400-meter hurdles, notching a 1:02.86 mark to rank 23rd at the D-II level.
While a portion of the Broncos' roster will compete at Mt. SAC, the rest of the student-athletes will take part in the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday in Azusa.
