Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision on Thursday to open a four-game series with Cal State San Bernardino.

Despite Mike Santora going 3-for-4 at the plate to raise his hit streak to 15 games and Jordan Whitman adding a 2-for-4 performance to bump his streak to 16, the Broncos' offense could only muster three runs on Coyotes' starting right-hander Aaron Brooks. CSUSB reliever Josh Pond pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.

The Broncos fall to 23-13 overall and 16-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Coyotes improve to 16-15 overall and 13-10 through conference play. Based on winning percentage, CSUSB slides ahead of CPP in the league standings.

The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead Thursday. To get those two runs, Chris Miller doubled in Jenzen Torres in the second inning and Whitman doubled in Santora during the third. CPP starting right-hander Erick Ruvalcaba worked out of jams throught the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth.

The big knock for CSUSB came in the form of a two-run double from David Silvas to cap off a three-run rally for the hosts, giving them a 3-2 lead. The Coyotes tacked on three more in the eighth inning, behind another two-run double by Silvas to put the game out of reach.

Ruvalcaba finished the outing with six innings pitched, while giving up 10 hits and four earned runs. Shane Philipps remained the lone bright spot on the mound for the Broncos, throwing two scoreless innings to wrap up the contest.

The two squads return to action Friday with another single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
