Box Score

POMONA, Calif. -
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered a 5-3 loss Wednesday to Concordia in non-conference action.

The Broncos outhit the visiting Eagles, 11-8, and held a 3-1 lead through the first five innings. Nonetheless, CUI staged a late rally and demonstrated strong relief pitching to close out the two-run victory.

CPP's record falls to 25-15, while the Eagles' improve to 28-16. CUI plays out of the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) of the NAIA. The Broncos will host a team out of the same league, San Diego Christian, at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

With Wednesday's contest being played outside of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and GSAC competition, the meeting served as a way for the teams to work in different pitchers and test themselves against unfamiliar foes.

In 2010, the Broncos and Eagles played to a one-run result and this season's affair also proved to be closely matched. Both starters on the mound, CPP's Erick Ruvalcaba and CUI's Jordan Hartley, kept the offenses scoreless through the first three innings.

The Eagles struck for a run in the fourth when Ryan Sheeks singled in Kyle Konicek. The visiting lead didn't hold for long though, as the Broncos rallied for three runs in that same inning. Travis Taijeron and Jenzen Torres got on base with singles and then Chris Miller came through with a clutch two-out double to score both of those runners. A Tyson Edwards double capped off the rally when bringing in Miller.

Helped by a triple from Konicek, the visiting CUI squad brought it to a one-run margin in the sixth. The next inning, the Eagles put three scores on the board with the key hit coming on a Matt Ivanoff triple.

The CUI relievers proved to be key contributors in Wednesday's result, as Josh White, Jake Hovis and Ryan Day worked four scoreless innings to conclude the game. White got the win to improve to 1-1, while Day earned his seventh save of 2011.

Four Broncos posted two-hit performances on Wednesday, including Mike Santora, who extended his hitting streak to 19 games. A streak of the same length came to end unfortunately, as Jordan Whitman went 0-for-5 on the day.

Nine games remain in the CPP regular season, as the Broncos will wrap up the conference schedule with a road series at Cal State Monterey Bay and then a four-game set against Cal State L.A.
