Triton Invitational Results
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Highlighted with a stellar performance from
Jacob Deavers in the 400-meter hurdles, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team showcased its talents Saturday at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego.
"It was a good day and we have one more chance next weekend to improve our marks before conference championships," CPP head coach Troy Johnson said. "We're all excited about going up to Turlock and battling with the rest of our league.”
Deavers increased his chances of competing at the NCAA Division II Championships with a strong performance Saturday. In the 400-meter hurdles, he improved on his “B” provisional national qualifier with a mark of 53.27 to place fourth overall.
His previous best in the event this year was 53.86, which he ran at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational. Also on Saturday at UCSD, Deavers finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, recording a 15.04 time.
Carter Griffin placed third overall in the 400-meter dash, falling just behind his season-best time with a 48.27 mark Saturday. He also took fifth in the 200-meter race, notching a 21.69 time.
Jersain Torres starred in the 1,500-meter race, recording the team's top 2011 time so far at 3:56.94. That finished as the eighth-best mark of the event Saturday. Several other Broncos performed well in that same race, with Ryan Carrell, Mariano Baez and Clark Selters all tallying season bests.
Torres placed first in the 5,000-meter event, ending as the only runner to finish below 15 minutes at 14:51.93.
Lance Walkington finished fifth in the javelin Saturday with a distance of 204-11.
Other personal bests for the season included Travis Voorhees' 14-2.5 mark in the pole vault, Nathan Schultz's 45-9 in the shot put and Shane Cioni's 149-6 in the discus throw.
