POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued to click offensively Tuesday afternoon, as the Broncos defeated Grand Canyon, 7-4, in a non-conference contest at Scolinos Field.
It marked the 20th win of the season for CPP, a squad that holds a 13-11 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Antelopes of GCU, playing out of the Pacific West Conference, drop to 18-18 overall.
Although the Lopes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, the Broncos rallied for four scores in the bottom half of that inning.
Jenzen Torres, who earned the CCAA Player of the Week honor on Monday, initiated the rally by getting hit by a pitch.
Chris Miller followed with a single and then
Stephen Gonzalez drew a walk to load the bases.
Mike Neff delivered with an RBI single and then
Allen Rodarte reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Miller.
Ryan Goodman capped off the inning with a key two-run single up the middle.
With the help of cleanup hitter Tyler Bair, the Lopes managed to tie the game at 4-4 with two runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth. CPP regained its lead quickly though, as a Torres double in the bottom of the fifth scored Whitman to put the Broncos ahead 5-4.
CPP added two more runs before the afternoon was over, securing a 7-4 result over the visiting GCU squad. The Broncos received key relief contributions from
Shane Philipps and
Geoff Broussard, who combined for 2.2 perfect innings to close out the contest.
Whitman raised his hitting streak to 11 games, while
Mike Santora bumped his up to 10. CPP right-hander
Scott Sibley earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season while GCU's Colin Courtland suffered the loss to fall to 2-3 in 2011.
Up next, CPP will resume conference play with a four-game series with San Francisco State this weekend. The Broncos will start that set on Friday at 3 p.m.
