LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2011 NCAA Division II postseason, falling 10-2 Friday night to Sonoma State.
The Broncos will now challenge top-seeded UC San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner of that contest will challenge SSU on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
The Seawolves' Kyle Jones launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the first Friday and the SSU offense stayed hot the rest of the game. SSU improves to 35-19 overall, while CPP falls to 34-22.
Jones ended up with a 3-for-3 performance to go along with four runs batted in, as the Seawolves collected 11 hits. The Broncos totaled four hits, with an RBI single from
Travis Taijeron and an RBI double by
Allen Rodarte.
Jake Reed and
Ryan Dunn threw admirably in relief for CPP, holding SSU to just one earned run in the final 3.2 innings.
