POMONA, Calif. – After allowing a goal just six minutes in during Friday's home opener against Cal State San Bernardino, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team couldn't convert its offensive chances and ended up falling by a 2-0 result at Kellogg Field.
For the Coyotes, Marco Martinez struck with a score at the 5:06 mark and Lee Nishanian added an insurance goal in the 70th minute as CSUSB picked up its first win of the season. The Broncos drop to 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Coyotes stand at 1-2-0 through league action.
On the first score, Martinez capitalized on a strong throw-in by D.J. Vigil on the left side. Martinez took a few steps into the box and sent a hard shot to the left of diving CPP goalkeeper
Kris Minton.
One of the Broncos' best chances of the opening period came in the 23rd minute when
Sean Gurley blasted a free kick toward the upper part of the net. Unfortunately for CPP, the Coyotes' keeper Tanner Olinger deflected it over the frame and out of danger.
The Broncos outshot CSUSB in the first half, 5-4, and attempted two corner kicks to the visitors' zero. Nonetheless, the Coyotes took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Out of the break, the CSUSB attack put together a solid chance just 26 seconds in. After Vigil slipped a pass into the box, Martinez ripped a shot that seemed destined for the goal. Minton, diving to his left, managed to get a foot on the ball to keep it out of the net.
A series of Bronocs' shots came in the 63rd minute, capped off by an attempt from
Liam Hall from about 16 yards out that curled just right of the frame.
The Coyotes' second score, which arrived at 69:34, came about after a scramble in the box as the ball bounced around. After it caromed off a few players on both sides, Nishanian managed to tap it in at the goalmouth.
With physical play throughout the match, it turned a bit more tense in the final stages. CSUSB's Martin Esqueda drew a second yellow caution at the 88:32 mark and a subsequent ejection, which means he will be forced to sit the Coyotes' next match on Sunday. With little time left in Friday's contest, the Broncos failed to get on the scoreboard despite playing with an extra man.
Daniel Gomez finished with a team-high three shots for the hosts, while Minton totaled five saves.
Up next, CPP will host UC San Diego at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Tritons defeated San Francisco State Friday, 1-0, to improve to 2-1-0 in CCAA play.
