POMONA, Calif. – Behind a three-point effort from
Justine Barclay and a game-winning score by
Valerie Strawn, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team defeated Cal State San Bernardino Friday, 2-1, to remain undefeated.
The Broncos, now 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assocation (CCAA), will host nationally-ranked UC San Diego on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Among the other top contributors for the Broncos Friday,
Angela Garcia showed her speed to create several opportunities on offense while
Kristin Mihara put together another strong performance to bolster the back line.
CPP and CSUSB traded a considerable amount of chances in the first half. In the 30th minute, Strawn sent a nice pass along the left side for Barclay. With Coyotes' goalkeeper Tiffany Mallick approaching, Barclay lifted a high shot over the netminder but it bent into the left post and out of danger.
Barclay wasn't held off the board for long though, as she found the net exactly one minute later. Mallick, after controlling the ball in her own box, sent an errant pass toward a teammate. Barclay intercepted the attempt and quickly fired a shot into the left of the empty net to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage.
The Coyotes' best chance of the opening half came off a free kick with about three minutes remaining until intermission. Brittany Wilding struck the ball well but it hooked to the left of the net. CSUSB ended with a slim 5-4 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes but CPP carried the one-goal margin into halftime.
The visiting Coyotes found another scoring opportunity at the 57:10 mark, with Emily Mardon dribbling up the right side. She slipped a pass into the box for Carissa Kutkowski, who charged in and blasted a shot to the right of the net.
Meanwhile, the Broncos continued to capitalize on their chances. In the 68th minute, Barclay stole the ball from her defender in the right offensive corner. Sprinting toward the box, she sent a cross across to Strawn. Rising high in the air, Strawn bumped a header into the upper left corner of the net to extend CPP's advantage to 2-0.
The Coyotes found their first scoring result three minutes later, when Casey Hirsch intercepted a Broncos' pass at the top of the 18. She charged into to the box and placed a shot past CPP goalkeeper
Emily Miller to trim the margin to 2-1.
Despite some dangerous opportunities in the Broncos' defensive box late in the match, the CPP defense held tough and closed out the home victory.
