POMONA, Calif. - In a Sunday matchup to decide the lead in the South Division race, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team played UC San Diego tough in the first period as the score remained 0-0 into halftime. In the end the visiting Tritons, ranked fifth nationally, rallied for four second-half goals to secure the victory.

The result marks the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) loss for the Broncos, who drop to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play. UCSD improves to 4-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 through conference action.

In the 23rd minute with CPP on the attack, Angela Garcia sent a sharp cross into the box. On the receiving end, Justine Barclay made a nice move to pull Tritons' goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong out of position. Barclay flicked a shot toward the goal but luckily for UCSD, a defender was in position to clear it away from the end line.

The Broncos put together another solid chance with about five minutes left in the period. After controlling the ball at the top of the 18, Cindy Paez ripped a shot that appeared destined for the back of the net. It sailed just above the crossbar and the score remained stuck at 0-0 into intermission.

About one and a half minutes into the second half, the Tritons' offense got going. With Sarah McTigue sending a cross to the far post from the left side, Anne Wethe won a header and the ball trickled past CPP goalkeeper Emily Miller.

UCSD's next two scores both came off corner kicks. After Hayley Johnson attempts, Cassie Callahan struck for the first goal at 53:54 with a leaping shot at the far post. On the other corner kick, Izzy Pozurama lifted a header over Miller's head from about six yards out on the left side.

The final Tritons' goal arrived in the 89th minute when Kylie Hill sent a hard shot to the top of the net from about 22 yards out.

Garcia and Barclay paced the Broncos in shots with two apiece, while UCSD outshot CPP overall 17-11.  Up next for the Broncos will be a 4:30 p.m. matchup on Friday against Sonoma State, a contest that'll be part of the "Pack the Stands" festivities at Kellogg Field with CPP hosting a tailgate at 3:30 p.m.
