POMONA, Calif. - In the crowded conference volleyball standings, a two-win week can catapault a team up the ranks.
Seventh-place Cal Poly Pomona is still searching for its first two-match winning streak in league play but that'll continue to be the aim this week as the Broncos host Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills. CPP holds marks of 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
An undefeated stretch against the Golden Eagles and Toros would do wonders, as both those opponents are neighbors to the Broncos not only in SoCal but also in the standings. CSULA is also 3-4 and CSUDH is just above at 4-3.
Thursday's 7 p.m. match between the Broncos and Golden Eagles is highly anticipated on the CPP campus as it's "Pack the Gym" night with free rally towels and popcorn given to students while supplies last. The promotion items were provided by
Army ROTC.
Although the Toros might have been a team to overlook in 2011 as they went 0-22 in CCAA action, Dominguez Hills has posted a series of impressive wins in 2012. Earlier this year, the Toros swept first-place UC San Diego.
Bonja on Defense
Senior libero
Kelly Bonja continues to star in leading the Broncos' defensive effort. The San Dimas native has totaled 232 digs so far this season with a per set average of 4.55, which ranks second in the CCAA and 72nd nationally at the Division II level. In Friday's five-game road win at Cal State East Bay, Bonja tallied a season-high 33 digs in the CPP victory.
Kellogg Gym Atmosphere
In the most recent Thursday match at Kellogg Gym, The Herd showed up in full force to cheer on the Broncos as they took on the Tritons of UCSD. The announced attendance figure was 512 and this Thursday's match against the Golden Eagles of CSULA should bring even more fans out to get loud with a unified
#FearTheHerd crowd.
The Herd has become the fastest growing club on campus with 215 members signed up since the middle of September.
